Bone grafting is ideal for those seeking dental implants but are experiencing problems with low bone density.

Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies and  reabsorbes. This often leaves patients with poor quality and quantity of bone that may not be suitable for placement of dental implants. Today, we have the ability to grow bone where needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore proper function and esthetic appearance.

Dr. Mizin has been performing, and teaching other dentists how perform a full spectrum of bone grafting procedures using latest technologies in tissues regeneration.

About Bone Grafting

We can improve the height of available bone in the upper jaw by creating a new bone in the sinus. The process is known as ‘sinus augmentation’. We can obtain bone from elsewhere and add it to a deficient area. We can place this in an underlying area and place a bone in a better position once the healing stage is over. Today’s technologies offer many grafting material options. Most of these options do not require additional surgeries to obtain the graft from other areas in you mouth or body. Dr. Mizin and his team will inform you of all available options at the time of consultation.

It can take between 3-12 months before new bone is ready for dental implants. Large amounts of bone will take longer to mature. A process called ‘guided tissue regeneration’ is used by many surgeons. This involves a barrier being placed between the soft tissues that line the mouth and slow-moving bone cells and gives the cells time to grow. The barrier will disappear naturally once the right results have been achieved. Bone grafting can enhance the efficiency of implants significantly. Though grafting is a complex process, we have the skills and experience needed to provide you with the results you require.

The Process

Bone grafting is a safe procedure and we can discuss your options in-depth with you before surgery takes place to ensure you’re receiving the appropriate type of treatment for your needs. You’ll normally be given a local anaesthetic to reduce pain while the procedure is taking place and can opt for intravenous sedation if you need it. Once the procedure is completed, you will be provided with antibiotics as well as medication for pain if required. You will be advised not to consume specific foods to avoid putting pressure on the graft. You should be able to carry on with your day-to-day life as normal while the bone graft is healing. Once the grafted bone has fused or become a robust part of the existing bone your implants will be added.
